What is the purpose of birth assistants?
The safety and well-being of your baby are our top priorities, and sometimes two sets of hands are better than one! The birth assistant works alongside the midwife to ensure a seamless and secure birth experience by helping with things such as passing tools, assisting in charting, and assisting in emergencies. Most of the time it is a trained birth assistant, but could also be another licensed midwife.
Akilah White, Birth Assistant
Akilah is a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, midwife assistant, placenta encapsulator, and birth photographer, offering her services to families in the Hampton Roads area. Akilah has been working as a doula since the beginning of 2018 and completed her childbirth educator's training in the fall of 2019. She underwent training as a midwife assistant in 2020. Additionally, she holds an Associates degree in medical assisting.
Currently, Akilah operates her private practice, Akilah White Doula Services, where she provides doula care and much more to her clients. She is dedicated to maintaining continued education, and she also holds certifications in NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and BLS (Basic Life Support).
Akilah's passion lies in serving birthing women and their families by offering emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. Her goal is to empower parents and help them make evidence-based decisions throughout their birthing journey, whether it's in the hospital, birth center, or home setting.
Beyond her professional life, Akilah is a mother of two young adults and a devoted wife. During her free time, she enjoys traveling, shopping, and spending quality time with her family and friends.
